Thousands of jobs have been lost in the North East as struggling companies are hit by the credit crunch, the Chronicle can reveal today. The main impact so far has been on the construction industry as house building slows down and on manufacturing. The financial crisis which hit Northern Rock has also led to major job losses, though these have not yet appeared in the figures. However, the hope is that the half per cent cut in interest rates, along with the Government's 500bn bail out package for the banks, will give the economy a badly-needed boost.
Alan Clarke, chief executive of the regional development agency One NorthEast, warned of tough times ahead, though he remained optimistic about the medium and long-term prospects of the local economy.
New figures from One NorthEast reveal that 2,000 jobs were lost between March and June, and the numbers claiming job seekers' allowance rose by 5,000 between April and August. More.
